Incentive Programs and the KISS of Success If there was ever a task for applying the KISS factor (Keep It Simple Stupid) it's in rules writing. Overly-complicated rules confuse participants, impair the motivational value of the program, raise the cost of administration. The result is an under-performing program. Here are some basic tips for keeping the rules simple, the administration uncomplicated and the results on the mark. Have a clearly defined set of program goals The first step toward keeping the rules simple is to clearly define and understand the goals of the program. There should be as few goals as possible. If there are more than three goals, in most cases it is probably too many. The core rules for earning awards should be written to motivate participants to achieve the goals as defined. In other words, the largest portion of a participant's award earnings (award budget) should be directly linked to performance that serves to achieve one of the primary objectives. What about the "Bingo, Bango Bonus?" This is the name of the bonus you use after you've used every other imaginable bonus in one incentive program including the fast start bonus, monthly bonus, quarterly bonus, fast finish bonus, top performer bonus "boffo" product bonus and the "be-all-you-can-be bonus". The point is, don't go bonus-overboard. Bonuses are, "enhancements" a fine-tuning instrument to focus on a specific action that the overall program does not directly address.
